Spiny Cocklebur / Common
Cocklebur (Xanthium spinosum/Xanthium strumarium) These pesky annuals have become more invasive on roadsides and irrigated pasture. The mature seed heads are an irritant to livestock and lower wool value. The immature plants and seedheads of Common Cocklebur are toxic to livestock. Common Cocklebur is native to North America and Spiny Cocklebur was introduced from Europe. These plants will rapidly out-compete native annuals and drastically reduce the land value of irrigated pasture. |
