Keeping up-to-date and accurate information on www.weedfreefeed.com (cross referenced as www.weedfreeforage.com) will be a tremendous project. So we need YOUR help!! If you know of a feed store who will sell baled certified weed free feed, let us know. And if your feed store needs more information on selling weed free feed, have them contact us or print out the Certification for Certified Weed Free Forage (forage and feed are the same thing -- its just us horseowners refer to feed and agencies call it forage) and give it to them. If a local feed store can't find a grower or you can't find a seller, contact your local or a neighboring county ag commissioner -- they're listed on page "County Ag Commissioners". And if that person is no longer an ag commissioner or you have a problem, let us know. We'll run it down. And post it correctly! Our goal is to provide up-to-date, valid, current, timely information on weed free policy, restrictions, closures of public lands and to be a liaison between horsemen, feed outlets and growers so federal (and eventually state and local) public land users will know WHERE to buy certified weed free feed.

People have been e-mailing asking "Who is this group working on weed free feed?"

Basically they're a group of dedicated individuals who have volunteered their time (its been LOTS of hours), 'donated' out-of-pocket expense money plus lost job time/wages to attend these meetings to voice concerns of California horseowners in regards to noxious weeds and specifically weed free feed. Meetings have been held almost monthly in Sacramento and at the February 29, 2000 meeting, it was decided to form an official Working Group from the equine community and agencies involved. Directly involved are the National Forest Service who is spearheading the policies (see "Time Line"). The Bureau of Land Management and National Park Services have joined with an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding). And it is 'anticipated' that the California State Parks System, county and local trail systems and open space agencies will follow suit once the federal policy has been firmed up.

The basic charge of this Working Group is to monitor the weed free program, work together in its development and in general 'watch dog' the overall process with agencies!

Volunteering to service on the Working Group are:

  • Toby Horst, Vice-President, Backcountry Horsemen of California
  • Bob Svedeen, Trails Chairman, California State Horsemen's Association
  • Connie Berto, American Endurance Ride Conference, Marin Horse Council, EnviroHorse
  • Bonnie Davis, Free Lance Writer, Public Lands User
  • Duane Chamberlain, Hay balers
  • Karl Bishop, California County Agriculture Commissioners
  • Steve Schoenig, California Department of Food and Agriculture
  • Mark Quisenberry, California Agriculture Commissioners Weed and Vertebrate Committee
  • Joanna Cline, US Forest Service
  • Dianna Brink, Bureau of Land Management
  • Mietek Kolipinski, National Park Service

The Working Group still NEEDS representatives from Hay Growers, Packers Association, California State Parks and Caltrans.
