 Tarweeds (Holocarpha spp., Madia sp.)

These native annuals are becoming prominent pests in rangeland throughout the California Sierra foothills.

These plants display valuable grass forage thereby reducing the grazing land value. The yellow blooms are prominate in August.

Tarweeds germinate in the fall with the first rains and continue through April. Since tarweeds establish a large taproot, they can use stored soil moisture.

These plants have dominated annual grassland by taking advantage of under-used resources of moisture, nutrients and light.
